For
more than five years, the Darfur region of Sudan has been engulfed
in a
war that receives little attention in the outside world. Hundreds
of thousands of people
have been killed and millions have been forced from their
homes, some to insecure refugee camps in Darfur
and many to neighboring Chad.
In spite of these daunting obstacles, the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee, in close cooperation with other aid and human rights organizations, is working to increase protection for those most vulnerable in the refugee camps -- particularly women and children. And UUSC is working in Washington and with Unitarian Universalist congregations around the country to raise the issue of Darfur with the new U.S. Congress.
The U.S. government labeled the violence in Darfur "genocide" in September, 2004 but it has done little to bring pressure to bear on the Sudanese government. Most forms of relief and humanitarian assistance have been cut off by the Sudanese government.
